The Sixth Wave Alliance (SWA) brings together Australian industry, research and government collaborators in order to promote and facilitate the adoption and creation of robotics and automation technology for the benefit of Australia.

SWA seeks to connect all key robotics research organisations and industry partners in Australia, and provide a framework to enable a high level of research and development collaboration among partner institutions, leveraging existing programs and investments. This allows the SWA to target large-scale, national problems of strategic and commercial relevance to Australia and internationally, far beyond what individual robotics research groups in the country are able to achieve.

Team Australia: Accelerating our global robotics opportunity

The continental size of Australia, as well as its relatively small population and low population density outside the major urban centres poses significant problems, some of which can be addressed through advanced robotics and autonomous systems technologies.

The Sixth Wave Alliance will:

  • Establish mechanisms for closer collaboration and partnership among Australian Robotics research groups to create the critical mass required to address large-scale Australian and international challenges using robotics technologies.
  • Increase the national and international impact of Australian robotics research.
  • Accelerate the uptake of Australian technologies by national and international markets, and the establishment of new companies and industries in the sector.
  • Enable the development of a comprehensive robotics R&D strategy for Australia, as well as a unified engagement with key national stakeholders, and particularly with the Australian government; this will build on the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision's Robotics Roadmap developed by multiple participants under the leadership of QUT.

The Australian Centre for Robotic Vision released A Robotics Roadmap for Australia on 18 June 2018, which can be viewed here

Participating Organisations

CSIRO's Data61, as a national and non-partisan organisation, is ideally positioned to work with all stakeholders in research, government, private sector and NGOs, to lead the establishment of the Sixth Wave Alliance (SWA), as a team Australia initiative.

Current members include:

  • AlphaBeta
  • CSIRO
  • Department of Industry, Innovation and Science
  • METSIgnited
  • NERA (National Energy Resources Australia)
  • QUT
  • The University of Queensland
  • The University of Sydney
  • Woodside

Join the Sixth Wave Alliance

The Alliance is open to government agencies, robotics companies, and non-governmental agencies and private sector companies that benefit from robotics technologies.
