Regulatory Compliance

Rules and regulation are a necessary part of a functioning society. However, regulatory systems can often be complex, subject to change and difficult to navigate for businesses - costing time and money. With an estimated cost of $250 billion compliance has become Australia’s fastest growing sector.

In order to address the regulatory complexities of industry becoming more data-driven, technology needs to be part of the solution. To help tackle the nation’s compliance challenge and make it easier to do business in Australia, Data61 has re-imagined regulation as an open platform based on digital logic.

Data61 has developed Regorous, a tool which will help governments to assess compliances and companies to understand regulatory requirements and current status. Regorous uses machine learning to rapidly analyse large quantities of regularity information to report on compliance needs, making it easier to do business.

Sentiment Analysis

Using analytics to identify keywords and patterns in social media posts, Data61 is able to track user sentiments and emotions.  The potential use cases of these capabilities are tracking public sentiment towards policy changes and tracking user’s emotions to better understand our mental health.

With the support of Amazon Web Services, Data61 have developed an online web tool called 'We Feel' for The Black Dog Institute . We Feel aims to verify whether social media can accurately map our emotions. It uses language-processing techniques to look at the English words people use in these posts and then maps these words to a hierarchy or ‘wheel of emotions’. The tool will also help understand questions such as how strongly our emotions depend on social, economic and environmental factors such as the weather, time of day, day of the week, news of a major disaster or a downturn in the economy.

Getting your payroll correct can be complex and confusing, with changing enterprise agreements and industry awards, mistakes can be costly and time consuming to correct. PwC and Data61 have joined forces to co-create PaidRight , a web application that uses advanced data analytics to enable you to audit the accuracy of your payroll.

PaidRight uses emerging data technology to interpret the complexities of modern awards and enterprise agreements to identify errors that may exist in your payroll. Transforming rules and regulations into digital logic using a multi-stage process to make connections between complex regulations. While PaidRight is digital logic at its best, it still requires human interaction. One of the strengths of PaidRight is that it uses the interaction between computer and humans to deliver best practice decision-making.
